PM to inaugurate smart city projects on June 25

To mark the first anniversary of the smart city flagship programme, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate 83 projects on June 25 in Pune to kick-start the execution of works in 20 smart cities.

To mark the first anniversary of the smart city flagship programme, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate 83 projects on June 25 in Pune to kick-start the execution of works in 20 smart cities.

Out of 83, while 14 projects are in Pune, remaining 69 falls in other 19 cities selected in the first round of the “Smart City Challenge Competition”. The total cost of these projects is Rs 1,770 crore. Mr Modi will launch the “Smart City Mission” projects from Pune’s 5,000-capacity Shiv Chatrapati Sports Complex.

Urban development ministry in a press release said on Thursday: “Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch the smart city projects on June 25, kick-starting execution of Smart City Plans of 20 cities selected in the first round of the competition.”

Outlining some of the sectors which will be covered in these projects, the release added: “These projects are related to solid waste management under Swachchh Bharat Abhiyaan, water supply projects, sewage treatment plants and development of open and green spaces under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation. It will also include housing projects for urban poor under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.

‘Smart Net Portal’ which enables the cities under different urban missions to share ideas and solutions for various issues during the implementation of various missions will also be inaugurated on the occasion.

All the first batch of 20 smart cities under Smart City Mission will be linked through video-conferencing. Among the projects to be launched some are in New Delhi Municipal Council area where mini-sewerage treatment plants, 444 smart classrooms, bio-methanation plant, WiFi, smart LED streetlights, city surveillance and command and control centre would be initiated.
