PM doesn’t believe in dialogue: Congress

The Congress on Sunday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi does not believe in dialogue, likes one-way communication and his mindset is responsible for the atmosphere of confrontation.

The Congress on Sunday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi does not believe in dialogue, likes one-way communication and his mindset is responsible for the atmosphere of confrontation. Its attack came ahead of the Budget Session of Parliament.

While the Union ministers are attacking the main Opposition for its obstructive role inside Parliament, the Opposition has been accusing the government of being arrogant and failing to evolve consensus on issues of national importance. Interestingly, the floor managers too have been competing with the BJP leaders in attacking the Opposition.

Responding to a question on BJP leader Yashwant Sinha’s reported comment, senior AICC spokesperson and deputy leader of the party in the Rajya Sabha Anand Sharma said: “The Prime Minister does not believe in dialogue. He likes one-way communication, be it with his organisation or with the media. Even inside Parliament, he does not believe in discussion.”

“His mindset is responsible for the atmosphere of confrontation. His arrogance and obstinacy are responsible for the situation of confrontation between the government and the Opposition,” he alleged.

Mr Sharma claimed that the Prime Minister has not made any effort in the past 20 months since coming to power to usher in an atmosphere of constructive cooperation by taking the Opposition and its leaders into confidence.

“His style of functioning, his concentration of decision-making is proving detrimental to parliamentary democracy,” he said, adding that it was a matter for concern.

Replying to a question on forming an alliance in Uttar Pradesh for the Assembly polls next year, Mr Sharma said the party is making efforts to strengthen itself on the ground and suggested that there was still time to decide such issues.

He said that the Congress attempt would be to defeat the BJP and bring together progressive forces.

Keeping up the offensive on the Rohith Vemula suicide issue, he lashed out at the PM for not taking any action against Union ministers Smriti Irani and Bandaru Dattatreya. Mr Sharma regretted that the PM did not even refer to the issue in his Mann Ki Baat radio programme despite the fact that the dalit scholar’s death has sparked of agitation on university campuses in the country.

He alleged that the PM’s “failure” to sack his colleagues showed that the sympathy he showed towards Rohith in a speech last week was just a “pretence”.

He alleged that senior BJP leaders were adding insult to injury by claiming that Rohith was not a dalit.

He accused the government of being “directly responsible” for the tension and the agitation in the wake of the suicide of Rohith.
