To make the Padma awards nomination process more transparent, any Indian can now recommend any achiever for the awards, and can do so online provided he/she provides Aadhaar details to establish his/her identity and for authenticity. This, the government hopes, will check the present practice of influential individuals lobbying on behalf of their nominees.

Sources said opening up the system will help identify unsung or lesser-known people who have excelled in different fields but do not indulge in lobbying. This, they claimed, would transform the national honours into a truly people’s award that will no longer be restricted to the elite.

It is also hoped it would curb the current “crony culture”.

The government has already received over 1,700 nominations for next year’s awards, and the last date to submit them is September 15.
