The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), on Sunday, described UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav as a “failure” and said that the young leader had belied the expectations of the people. Talking to reporters here on Sunday, Union minister and senior NCP leader Tariq Anwar said that people had a great deal of expectations from Mr Akhilesh Yadav, who is young and energetic, but his performance in the past 18 months has not been up to the mark. “People are disappointed with him and their expectations have crashed,” he said. Responding to queries about the conviction of RJD leader Lalu Prasad Yadav, Mr Tariq Anwar said that he remains a factor in Bihar politics and his impact is not yet over. “It is a wait and watch situation to observe his impact in Bihar and the Lalu factor cannot be ignored,” he said. Replying to a question, Mr Anwar said that the situation in Muzaffarnagar had not yet returned to normal and the state government should make sincere rehabilitation efforts so that people living in relief camps can return to their homes. He demanded that fast track courts should be set up to hear cases related to Muzaffarnagar riots so that the guilty can be punished at the earliest. Mr Tariq Anwar said that some parties like the BJP were trying to derive political mileage of the situation by polarising votes on religious lines. “The state government should also ensure that politicisation of the situation is not allowed. The Akhilesh-government should remain alert and keep a check on such designs,” he added. The NCP leader mounted a veiled attack on BJP leader Amit Shah when he said that Mr Narendra Modi had sent his agent here and was trying to replicate his Gujarat formula of polarisation of votes.
