The movement in investigations and trial of the Mumbai terror attack case in Pakistan continues at a “glacial pace”, the ministry of external affairs (MEA) has said in its annual report for 2015-16 tabled in Parliament on Monday. Calling the Mumbai terror attack trial in Islamabad as “one of the most important markers of Pakistan’s commitment to combat terrorism emanating from its soil”, the MEA observed that “trial of seven Pakistanis at the anti-terrorism court witnessed repeated adjournments and non-appearances/ frequent changes in prosecution lawyers”. India also said it continues to seek extradition of David Headley who has been sentenced to 35 years in prison by a US court for his role on planning the Mumbai terror attack in November, 2008. The MEA report also said that “continued terrorism emanating from Pakistan remained a core concern”.

On the Pathankot terror attack that took place on January 2 this year, the MEA report said that “although initial information available pointed to the involvement of banned terrorist outfit JeM, the United Jehad Council (UJC), led by Syed Salahuddin, claimed responsibility for the attack” and that “specific and actionable information on leads (were) provided to Pakistan”.

The MEA report also mentioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Lahore last Christmas to personally convey his greetings to his Pakistani counterpart on his birthday and said, “PM’s stopover at Lahore at short notice underscores the vision of India’s leadership to build a normal and well-connected neighbourhood in South Asia, including through innovative and informal means”.

On China, the MEA report said “high-level political exchanges as well as economic interactions were expanded” while it documented the agreements signed between the two countries during several high-ranking bilateral visits by dignitaries of the two sides.

On growing ties with the United States, the MEA report said “both India and the US have a robust strategic partnership”.
