Orissa: Student ‘gangraped’ inside NIFT campus

Tension prevailed on Saturday in Orissa’s KIIT University campus following alleged “gangrape” of a student of National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) by some unidentified youth on Friday night.

The students staged a road blockade demanding immediate arrest of the accused.

According to students, the girl was “gangraped” by the miscreants when she was on her way to NIFT hostel located inside the KIIT University campus.

“At around 2 am on Friday night, when the girl was returning to her hostel, she was taken away by some unidentified youths. Although it happened in front of the hostel warden and security guards, no one protected the girl who was desperately screaming for help,” the agitating students said. Alleging that all efforts were being made to suppress the incident, the students demanded for production of CCTV footages to know the identity of the accused.

“All attempts are being made to suppress the incident. Eyewitnesses who saw the incident have been asked to remain absent. One of the security guards of the hostel who is suspected to be involved in the crime, has remained absent today,” the students said.

They further alleged that the warden didn’t help the girl despite her loud appeal to help her.

Protesting the incident, the students blocked KIIT-Sikharchandi road and demanded immediate arrest of the culprits.

“The entire incident has got recorded through a CCTV camera and we demand examination of the video footage by college authorities to identify the accused.

However, deputy commissioner of police Satyabrata Bhoi denied the charge of gangrape and said investigation was on to know what exactly had happened.

“As far as I know, no such incident (gangrape) has taken place. She was under medication. She is okay and denying everything. Investigation into the matter is on,” said Bhubaneswar DCP Bhoi.
