Tension prevailed on Monday morning at the Polasara police station in Orissa’s Ganjam district as irate locals set a police jeep on fire after some eve-teasers, who had passed lewd comments on a girl, allegedly killed her mother.
According to reports, one Manoj Nahak of Bhabarada and his associates had passed objectionable comments on a girl 15 days ago. The parents of the girl, Prakash Swain and Kamala Swain, had lodged a complaint with the Polasara police in this regard.
Angry over filing of the case against them, the accused, Manoj Nahak, and his friends on Sunday attacked the girl’s father and mother when they were working in the paddy field.
Though the father of the girl managed to escape from the spot, the miscreants allegedly thrashed the girl’s mother with an iron rod which led to her death.
The woman, who was rescued in a critical condition, was admitted to a hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead.
Following the incident, irate locals staged road blockade on Monday morning by keeping the body on the road and demanded the immediate arrest of the accused. They gheraoed and ransacked the Polasara police station. This apart, they torched a police jeep.
Inspector general (southern range) Amitabh Thakur and local sub-divisional police officer Dillip Das rushed to the spot. Seven platoons of police force have been deployed at the spot to avoid any untoward incident.
