Charging the Central government of making “fundamental changes” in the legislation on the whistleblowers’ protection, the Opposition parties on Monday demanded that the amended bill should be send to a select committee. The government maintained the amendments were necessitated to introduce many safeguards in the earlier legislation and insisted that the amended bill does not reduce the protection cover provided to the whistle blowers or in any way protect the corrupts.

As the Whisteblowers Protection (Amendment) Bill, 2015 was moved in Rajya Sabha for consideration, Congress, CPI(M) and SP members asked the government not to rush the discussion and passage the bill. Congress member Jairam Ramesh alleged that “a very major dilution” was being made in the legislation and insisting “please do not rush with a discussion” on it.

Minister of state in PMO Jitendra Singh, however, dismissed the charge, saying it was “not appropriate” to say that the government was trying to curtail the scope of the bill.

Rejecting government’s arguments, Congress member Mani Shankar Aiyar said he is being “extremely disingenuous” in arguing that the Act passed in the previous Lok Sabha was brought with “slight” changes.
