Opposition may use BR Ambedkar birthday to target government
A two-day discussion on India’s Constitution, as part of the 125th birth anniversary of Dr B.R. Ambedkar, could be utilised by the Opposition to target the government on growing intolerance.
A two-day discussion on India’s Constitution, as part of the 125th birth anniversary of Dr B.R. Ambedkar, could be utilised by the Opposition to target the government on growing intolerance.
Besides, it would be used to “brainwash” the BJP members, leaders who are not impressed by the freedom struggle and the Constitution.
A senior Opposition leader said on Thursday that this would be an opportunity to educate the BJP MPs, especially those who got elected for the first time, about the historic importance of the Constitution based on human values.
Asked will it be like a “censure motion” against hardliners in the BJP and the government, the leader said this would be an opportunity to educate all those who do not want to be educated.
Meanwhile, responding to questions on provocative comments made by some governors, the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad told reporters that such comments would not have been made had the BJP leaders in the government and the party checked such people, took action against them either by dropping from the Cabinet or suspending them from the party. He also said majority community in India is tolerant and secular.
Interestingly, the discussion on the Constitution could see isolation of some parties in Parliament as members of non-BJP parties would highlight the secular, liberal spirit of the Constitution.
From the Congress, six members are expected to take part in the discussion in the Lok Sabha. Intellectuals, including writers, artists, scientists, industrialists, film personalities, have come out against the growing intolerance while the President has strongly disapproved it.
