The JNU controversy has now hit the Kashmiri students studying in various colleges and universities of the national capital. Apprehensive about their safety and security, many people have directly approached lieutenant-governor Najeeb Jung to ensure safety of the Kashmiri students.
The lieutenant-governor has appointed special commissioner of police (crime) Taj Hasan as the special nodal officer to address such issues of the Kashmiri students.
A statement issued by Raj Niwas said: “The lieutenant-governor’s office has been approached by some people that students from Kashmir are apprehensive of their safety and security in the city. In case, there is any apprehension or any misconduct towards them, they should contact Taj Hasan, special commissioner of police (crime), who has been appointed as the special nodal officer for addressing such issues.”
The Raj Niwas statement said that Mr Hasan can be contacted via phone on 1093/100 or via email on splcp-crime-dl@nic.in. “These numbers are manned round-the-clock. This arrangement is on similar to the one made for students from the Northeast.”
Soon after JNU Students’ Union president Kanhaiya Kumar was arrested and the police had started looking for five varsity students for allegedly raising anti-national slogans on the campus on February 9, many landlords in and around the JNU campus started questioning students who had been living as tenants in their respective houses.
Reports also suggested that many Kashmiri students studying in the Jawaharlal Nehru University had already left for their home state as they feared that they could be targeted by fringe elements or could face the wrath of the Delhi police. Some Kashmiri students in Jamia Millia Islamia said that they had stopped moving out of the campus. “Such is the fear that one Kashmiri student has already left for his home town,” said one student.
