The Union human resources development ministry has decided to roll back the UPA government’s decision to give 40 per cent weightage to students’ Class 12 board marks for admission to the National Institutes of Technology, three years after it was introduced.
The HRD ministry has notified that “the present system of giving 40 per cent weightage for the Class 12 marks in calculating the ranks in the JEE Main shall be dispensed with.”
Till now 31 NITs admitted students based on all-India ranks prepared with 60 per cent weightage to a candidate’s JEE (Main) performance and 40 per cent weightage to his Class 12 marks.
The decision comes after examining the report of Ashok Misra committee and considering the public feedback, ministry of human resource development has notified the following changes in the JEE pattern for 2017.
A statement issued by the HRD ministry said that the performance of the students in the Class 12 examination shall be a crucial parameter for determining the eligibility of the student for the JEE examination.
“For the candidates to qualify in the JEE examination, they shall have secured at least 75 per cent marks or be in the top 20 percentile in the Class 12 conducted by the respective boards,” the notification said.
“For Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe students, this condition shall be relaxed to 65 per cent marks. All other JEE examination systems shall remain unchanged,” it added.
