Accepting the Centre’s stand that the court cannot put fetters on the President’s power to revoke Central rule in Arunachal Pradesh, the Supreme Court refused Tuesday to stop the governor from taking steps for the formation of a new government in the Assembly that has a strength of 58 MLAs now.
With the Supreme Court putting no hurdles on forming a new government, the Centre is considering revocation of President’s Rule in the state soon, possibly Wednesday. A decision on this may be taken at the Union Cabinet meeting scheduled on Wednesday.
The home ministry is waiting for a report from governor J.P. Rajkhowa on the latest political situation in the state after 31 MLAs, led by Congress dissident Kalikho Pul, met him on Monday. Official sources said the governor’s report is expected soon and if it suggests formation of a new government, the home ministry may present a note before Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting to be chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
While the Speaker had disqualified 14 rebel Congress MLAs, the Gauhati high court stayed the disqualification and the appeal is still pending before the Supreme Court, which has not passed any order.
