Indicating that law and order continues to be the top priority of his government, Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar held a review meeting on law and order with all top administrative and police officials, including district magistrates and superintendents of police, in Patna on Saturday, a day after being sworn in as CM. “Curbing deteriorating law and order is my government’s top priority,” he said.

Addressing administrative officials in a video-conference, Mr Nitish Kumar directed them to strictly impose “rule of law” in their districts through aggressive policing. “My government will not compromise on the issue of jungle raj. For me face does not matter, performance and strict policing in the state is more important to me and my government,” Mr Kumar said. His statement is being viewed as a straight message to his allies, including the RJD.

Mr Kumar, who had contested and won the Assembly elections on promises to “keep deteriorating law and order under check” and to ensure “development of the state by creating a ground for fresh investment”, said after the review meeting: “I believe development will come only through good governance and a strict law and order system in the state, and this has been my guiding principle in life. My government will continue to work on the same principle.”

The review meeting is significant given that the Opposition NDA has started to doubt the state government’s seriousness on the issue of “jungle raj”, saying, “With RJD part of the government, controlling law and order will prove tough for Nitish Kumar.”

The Opposition BJP has already started to analyse the performance of the newly-formed Grand Alliance government led by Mr Nitish Kumar.
