The RJD Legislature Party meeting on Friday authorised party chief Lalu Prasad Yadav to take a final decision on the selection of the leader of the RJD Legislature Party, likely Saturday, and gave its consent to Mr Nitish Kumar’s name for leader of the Grand Alliance Legislature Party.

Mr Nitish Kumar is set to be elected as the leader of the Grand Alliance Legislature Party on Saturday. Mr Lalu Yadav, after the RJD Legislature Party meeting on Friday, said, “My party has unanimously given consent to the name of Nitish Kumar. A final decision, however, will be taken during a meeting of the Grand Alliance on Saturday.” Mr Nitish Kumar is likely to take the oath as chief minister on November 20 in Patna’s Gandhi Maidan along with 35 to 38 ministers.

The final decision on the RJD Legislature Party leader is likely to be taken by Mr Lalu Yadav in Patna on Saturday. Sources said the newly-elected RJD legislators proposed the name of Mr Lalu Yadav’s younger son, Tejaswi Yadav, as their leader in the state Assembly.

Sources said the most difficult task for him will be to persuade his eldest son, Tej Pratap, who won from Mahua constituency. They said Mr Lalu Yadav, before nominating the RJD Legislature Party leader, will consult former chief minister and wife Rabri Devi and other members of his family. According to sources, “Tejaswi is more politically active. The party has proposed his name as legislature party leader and for a final decision the party has authorised Lalu Yadav.”

Confirming that legislators had authorised him during the meeting in Patna, Mr Lalu Yadav said, “We are meeting again and I will nominate the name of the legislature party leader on Saturday as the party has authorised me to take the final decision.” There are reports that the Congress party will hold a separate meeting on Saturday.
