NIA to take over case of missing Kerala youth

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) will formally take over investigations in connection with 21 missing youth from Kerala who are suspected to have joined terror outfit Islamic State (ISIS).

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) will formally take over investigations in connection with 21 missing youth from Kerala who are suspected to have joined terror outfit Islamic State (ISIS). Among those missing, which includes four women and three children, 17 are from Kasaragod and four from Palakkad.

Since NIA is the designated agency in the country to investigate terror related cases, thus despite the Kerala police having completed a part of the investigation the case will be handed over to the NIA. “Most of the ISIS related cases are being probed by NIA so it makes sense that this cases should also be handed over to them,’’ a home ministry official said.

A formal notification in this regard is expected to be issued this week itself following which all the nine cases in connection with these 21 missing persons will be handed over to the NIA.

The Kerala police had arrested a 29-year-old woman, Yasmin Ahmed, who was suspected to be involved in recruitment of young men and women from Kerala for ISIS. She was taken into custody just before she was to board a plane to Kabul where her husband, Abdul Rashid, is currently located.
