Security forces early on Wednesday morning destroyed a Naxal camp at Jakhalkund, a hamlet located on hill top in the borders of Dantewada and Sukma districts in Chhattisgarh’s south Bastar, killing four Maoists, including a woman commander.

A jawan was also injured in the incident.

According to Bastar inspector general of police S.R.P. Kalluri, a joint search party comprising personnel of district reserve force (DRG), special task force (STF) and CRPF launched a combing operation after getting a tip-off on the presence of armed Naxals in the forested village. Later, security forces cordoned off the Maoist camp.

The armed guerrillas, who numbered around 50, opened indiscriminate fire at the search party when they were zeroing in on the camp.

The troopers retaliated, leading to a gun battle that last nearly two hours. “Bodies of four Naxals, including two commander-ranked cadres in uniforms were recovered at the encounter site. Besides, a huge cache of arms and explosives were also found in the camp”, Mr Kalluri said.

Two the slain Maoists have been identified as commander of 26 platoon of Maoists, Madkam Deva, and Katekalyan area commander Masa.

A jawan was injured in the incident. He has been rushed to Raipur in an air ambulance.
