Sumitra Mahajan: Nation’s development is mirrored in SDGs’

Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan said on Saturday that the country’s development agenda is mirrored in the sustainable development goals.

She highlighted recent initiatives launched by the government, including like Jan Dhan Yojana, National Mission on Financial Inclusion, the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao scheme, Make in India, Digital India, to promote inclusion and social advancement.

Inaugurating the first meeting of Brics Women Parliamentarians’ Forum at Rajasthan Vidhan Sabha Chamber in Jaipur on Saturday, Ms Mahajan said the Brics is a relatively young group but the Brics countries together comprise 43 per cent of the world’s population and contribute 37 per cent of the world GDP.

“The success of the sustainable development goals (SDGs) will be dependent on their successful implementation in the Brics countries.”

Lauding that Brics has taken impressive strides beginning from a forum for consultation on economic issues of mutual interest to evolving into a group that now has various topical global issues on its agenda, she hoped that during India’s chairmanship, Brics cooperation will be strengthened further.

Ms Mahajan also said that the role of women parliamentarians is to highlight the concerns of the people.
