Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav said on Tuesday that he was now a “CBI-certified honest person”.
Speaking at a party function here, Mr Yadav said that the CBI had bothered him a great deal but could not find anything against him. “Everyone should keep their papers in order and maintain their accounts otherwise the CBI will frighten them. Anyone who rises from a poor background has to face this,” he said.
Mr Yadav said that the CBI had searched his house and also that of his relatives in the disproportionate assets case. He said that his fields and cattle were also counted.
“Finally they got nothing and now I am CBI-certified honest,” he said amidst thunderous applause.
CBI had in 2013 cleared Mr Yadav of charges that he misused his office as Uttar Pradesh CM to accumulate vast amounts of wealth. CBI has closed the case that began in 2007 on the grounds that there was insufficient evidence against the SP leader.
Mr Yadav also attacked the PM, saying he failed to fulfil his promise of giving every citizen a sum of Rs 15 lakhs from the black money stashed abroad.
He also said that the Prime Minister had failed to protect the country from terrorism from the Pakistan side and infiltration from China.
