My daughter was Jyoti Singh, not ashamed to take her name, says Nirbhaya’s mother

Nirbhaya’s mother appealed against the release of juvenile convict in the case.

New Delhi:

Three years after Nirbhaya was brutally gangraped on a moving bus in the national capital, her mother on Wednesday made a hard-hitting appeal for justice, by taking her real name for the first time in public. -"My daughter's name was Jyoti Singh and I am not ashamed to name her. You too, should take her name,-" she said, according to a report in NDTV.

Asha Devi who has been fighting a three-year-long battle for justice, made an impassioned appeal against the release of the juvenile convict on the case, who was the most brutal of the rapists.

-"What justice did we get On her third anniversary, the culprit is being set free. Where is the justice is in that -" she asked, referring to the youngest accused, who is set be released on December 20.

-"I don't know whether he is 16 or 18. I only know that when the crime is so brutal, there should be no age limit for punishment,-" she argued fervently against the decision to send him to a reform home.

Asha Devi made the address at an event as women’s and citizens group in the capital marked December 16 as 'Nirbhaya Chetna Divas' at Jantar Mantar.

Nirbhaya’s father had said that the youth, who was a juvenile at the time of the incident, should not be released as he is a -"threat-" to the society. -"For us he is the the killer of our daughter who is being set free despite his heinous crime. We demand that he should not be released,-" the father said. In the Parliament, BJP MP Hema Malini echoed their view and demanded that the convict be treated like an adult. “He is an adult and he should also be punished like an adult,-" Malini said. -"I have told it earlier also that the juvenile was more involved in the crime than the other convicts, who harmed the girl. He has got a very devilish mind, he is crime minded,-" Malini told the media outside the Parliament. The Centre had earlier asked the Delhi High Court to extend the observation home stay of the convict. Nirbhaya was brutally assaulted by six persons, including the juvenile in a moving bus in south Delhi on December 16, 2012. She had later succumbed to her injuries in a Singapore hospital.
