‘MK has no right to talk of dry law’

AIADMK supremo and Tamil Nadu chief minister J. Jayalalithaa reiterated her promise of closing down TASMAC in phases in the state and claimed that DMK chief M. Karunanidhi had no locus standi to speak about dry law as he was the one who lifted prohibition in the state.

The AIADMK leader was in Dharmapuri to address an election meeting and introduce her party candidates contesting from constituencies in Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts. She flew into Dharmapuri by a helicopter and landed at around 2.20 pm at the makeshift helipad close to the dais. But four hours before her arrival, crowds of partymen were brought to the venue at a private land on the Dharmapuri-Pennagaram road.

In her speech peppered with aggressive words on the Opposition and emphatic assertions of her performance, Ms Jayalalithaa claimed credit for completing the Hogenakkal drinking water project which had provided safe drinking water for 33 lakh people of Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri.

Brushing aside the DMK’s claim that the erstwhile DMK government had launched and nearly completed the project, Ms Jayalalithaa said the scheme was first conceived by MGR and later revived by her. However, under pressure from neighbouring Karnataka, Mr Karunanidhi tried to shelve the project.

The chief minister said she had fulfilled all the promises given during the 2011 elections. Besides, the government has also introduced other welfare schemes that she had not promised before that election.

Jayalalithaa promised to bring in dry law if she was elected again. First, the timing of the outlets and then their numbers would be reduced. Later, the bars attached to the shops will be shut. Centres to rehabilitate those who are addicted to liquor will be opened to achieve total prohibition. Jayalalithaa also assured equitable growth if her government was elected again.
