A MiG-27 aircraft of the Indian Air Force on a routine training sortie crashed into a residential area of Jodhpur city on Monday.

While the pilot ejected safely, three civilians are reported to be injured while two houses suffered damage. The plane crashed adjacent to a house in an open area in Mahaveer Nagar, Basni police station SHO Rajesh Yadav told PTI.

The plane crashed just after taking off from Jodhpur airbase. The plane caught fire after the crash and fire-fighters rushed to douse the blaze. The area was cordoned off by the police.

Defence spokesperson Lt. Col. Manish Ojha said, “The MiG-27 crashed at 1130 hours. The aircraft was on a routine training sortie. The pilot ejected safely.”

A court of inquiry has been ordered by the Indian Air Force authorities to look into the cause of the crash. Indian Air Force sources said the pilot had reported a technical problem and sought priority landing. However, as the engine had failed, he had to eject, the sources said.
