The MEA spokesperson, reacting on Friday to NIA chief Sharad Kumar’s reported statement that so far there was no evidence to suggest the involvement of a Pakistan government agency in the attack on the Indian Air Force base at Pathankot, said, “I would remind you that investigations are ongoing. Foreign secretary had conveyed to his Pakistani counterpart when they met in New Delhi in April that it was time for a review of the progress in investigation in the attack after the return of Pakistan’s JIT, which had gathered all evidence that it had wanted when it visited India.”
The MEA spokesperson added that enough information has been provided to the Pakistani authorities through two letters rogatory to conduct investigations in Pakistan so that all those associated in Pakistan with planning, support and execution of the attack are brought to justice. “At this stage, we await further response and information from Pakistan. It would be injudicious to speculate in this situation,” he said.
In Islamabad, Pakistan foreign office spokesman Nafees Zakaria said Mr Sharad Kumar’s statement had proved Pakistan’s innocence. He said Pakistan’s spirit of cooperation was manifested “in the action we took in the wake of the alleged incident and the joint investigation team’s visit was in this backdrop”. He added: “The JIT is examining whatever information and intelligence has been shared by India during the visit. Pakistan believes in peaceful coexistence with countries in the region and beyond.”
