Mayawati calls riots report ‘eyewash’

BSP president Mayawati has said that the Justice Vishnu Sahay Commission report on the Muzaffarnagar riots was “eyewash”, designed to save the Akhilesh government.
In a statement released here on Monday, Ms Mayawati said that the one-man judicial commission had been set up under public pressure but the commission has left the people disappointed with its report.
Ms Mayawati alleged the report also proved that the commission was not serious about ensuring punishment for the guilty and was more interested in giving a clean chit to the state government.
She further said that the Akhilesh government might be feeling a sense of relief following the report, but warned that “it would have to face the consequences”. She said time has come for the Muslim community to think what would be the value of their lives, property and religion if SP government were to remain in power. She asked the Muslims, dalits and deprived sections of society to keep in mind the bitter truth and take political steps to protect their interests.
The BSP president alleged that during the Muzaffarnagar riots, there was heavy loss of life and property as there was “clear understanding” between the SP government and the BJP.
She added that the state government had failed to take action against BJP leaders, who were prima facie guilty.
