Marry me or die with me, girl tells boyfriend

Residents of Balakati village, in the outskirts of Bhubaneswar, had a tough time on Wednesday to convince a lovelorn girl not to commit suicide over the denial of her lover to marry her, reports said on Thursday.

At around 10 am, the villagers found the girl running towards the bridge on Bhargavi River near Balakati Bazaar. Two boys, who were following the girl, were heard desperately asking her to stop running and to not jump off the bridge.

Heeding their request, the girl stopped, but soon all three of them entered into a heated exchange of words. When the villagers approached them to know what the matter was and why they were fighting among themselves, they were shocked to learn that the girl was insisting to commit suicide by jumping off the bridge and the boys were dissuading her not to take such an extreme step.

The villagers came to know that one of the two boys was in love with the girl. Since he had rejected her marriage proposal, the girl was about to commit suicide.

The villagers tried to deter the girl from taking the extreme step and said they would take up the matter with the boy’s parents.

The girl was, however, adamant in her decision and told the villagers that the boy must marry her forthwith in the local temple or end his life along with her if he really loved her.

“He has been assuring me for over two years now of marrying me. Each time I raise the issue, he avoids it on some pretext or the other. I cannot wait any longer. If he really loves me, he should marry me now, here at this village temple. Or else, he must die with me by jumping off the bridge on Bhargavi River to show that he loves and cares for me,” the girl told the villagers.

When this bizarre scene was going on, the parents of the girl arrived at the spot and took her home, assuring her that they would take up the marriage issue with the parents of the boy.
