In a bizarre incident, a man spent six months in jail in place of his elder brother because the police refused to listen to his pleas.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has now directed the Akhilesh government to pay a compensation of Rs 1 lakh to the victim, Amitabh Singh.

Amitabh’s elder brother Vinod Singh had been serving a 10 years sentence under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act but the latter died while he was out on parole. When the parole ended, the Barabanki police took away Amitabh and refused to acknowledge the fact that the real accused had died.

After the issue was raised by the media, the Barabanki police submitted fresh report with the CJM court and Amitabh was finally released on the intervention of NHRC.

Interestingly, even after the NHRC order, the state government sent a cheque of Rs 1 lakh as compensation, but Amitabh refused to accept the same since it was in the name of his deceased brother Vinod Singh. “We are rectifying he mistake and he will get a new cheque soon”, said a government official.
