Man with ‘ISIS link’ worked for Zakir Naik, held

A 42-year-old man with alleged Islamic State links was arrested by the Kerala anti-terrorism squad (ATS) from the Navi Mumbai area on Thursday.

A 42-year-old man with alleged Islamic State links was arrested by the Kerala anti-terrorism squad (ATS) from the Navi Mumbai area on Thursday.

A city ATS officer said the police had been seeking the man, identified as Arshi Qureshi, after his name cropped up in connection with the missing youths of Kerala — who it is believed have joined the Islamic State, a terrorist organisation.

The brother of one of the missing youths had told the police that Qureshi had tried to forcefully convert him to Islam and make him join the Islamic State.

Qureshi was a resident of Seawoods and working with the Islamic Research Foundation of Zakir Naik. He had allegedly been in touch with the ISIS for the past few years.

“A team of ATS officials from Kerala came to Navi Mumbai Wednesday night, and arrested Qureshi. Our team, along with the Kerala ATS officials, produced him in Navi Mumbai court today in the afternoon.”

He has been remanded in police custody for four days and is housed in Bhoiwada jail, currently. Following the remand, he will be taken to Kerala, said officials.
