Trinamul Congress leader and former West Bengal minister Madan Mitra, who is an accused in the Saradha chit fund scam, surrendered before the Alipore sessions court on Thursday after the Calcutta high court cancelled his bail.
Delivering its order, division bench of Justice Nishita Mhatre and Justice Tapash Mookherjea directed Mr Mitra to surrender before the additional chief judicial magistrate, Alipore on receipt of the order. Mr Mitra’s counsel S.K. Kapur sought seven days’ time to surrender, but the court rejected it. He also urged the court to allow Mr Mitra to remain in house confinement but even this request was turned down. “Calcutta high court is a temple of justice which has delivered justice to the people of West Bengal,” Mr Charyulu said when he stepped out of the court.
The division bench delivered its order at around 2.20 pm. At 4 pm, Mr Mitra accompanied by his son and close associates left in his Innova for Alipore court. “I have not yet received the copy of the court order but I am a law-abiding citizen,” he said.
