The disaster management team said the rural areas are in a bad condition. “We are waiting for more reports from the affected districts. Only then will we be able to say anything regarding the final toll,” principal secretary (disaster management) said.
According to reports, while six were killed in various parts of Patna, five died in Buxar. Deaths were also reported from Nalanda, Bhojpur, Rohtas, Kaimur, Aurangabad and Purnea. Katihar, Saharsa and Saran districts also recorded three deaths.
Large parts of Bhagalpur, Munger and Samastipur also recorded two deaths each, while Banka, Madhepura, Muzaffarpur and West Champaran districts registered one death each. More deaths were reported from other areas, including Gaya and West Champaran.
Besides, 24 people in various districts sustained injuries due to lightning, 16 with serious injuries are from Patna itself.
According to officials, Tuesday’s lightning made a deep crack of almost 30m in the ground in Naubatpur block on the outskirts of Patna.
Besides, Madhya Pradesh reported 16 deaths in the last two days though the state revenue control room here has confirmed seven.
Lightning claimed 12 lives in Ghazipur and Ballia districts of Uttar Pradesh in last 24 hours as heavy rains lashed parts of the state.
“We are verifying reports of the nine other deaths,” a Revenue department official said on Wednesday.
All the seven officially confirmed deaths due to lightning were reported from Syopur district, which has been witnessing torrential rains in the past two days.
While four deaths have been reported in Ghorara village, lightning claimed life of one each in the villages of Tinakapur, Budhera and Nunbaha in the district.
Unconfirmed reports said nine other people, all of them farm workers, were killed after being struck by lightning in six remote villages in the state. Lightning claimed the lives of 12 people in Ghazipur and Ballia districts in Uttar Pradesh in the course of the last 24 hours when heavy rains lashed parts of the state. According to reports, six persons, including five minors , were killed in Ballia district, the six other deaths being reported from various parts of Ghazipur. Four were also injured in the incidents.
A government spokesman said that heavy rains were recorded in Lalganj, Raniganj and Chail, each of which received 10 cm of rainfall, followed by 8 cm each in Manjhanpur and Baberu, 7 cm each in Gyanpur and Rajghat, while Mirzapur, Varanasi, Safipur, Ballia and Mau received 6 cm of rainfall each.
