Lie test on 3 former Vyapam employees

The CBI is set to conduct lie-detector tests on three former employees of the Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board (MPPEB) as part of its investigation of the multi-crore Vyapam scam.

The CBI is set to conduct lie-detector tests on three former employees of the Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board (MPPEB) as part of its investigation of the multi-crore Vyapam scam.

“The agency recently examined three former senior officials of the MPPEB in connection with its investigations into the alleged irregularities committed in the pre-medical examination in 2012. They gave conflicting versions during interrogation,” sources said. The CBI may conduct polygraph tests on them, they added. The CBI has so far registered more than 150 FIRs in the Vyapam scam. “Probe by the CBI has revealed that the Vyapam scam involved collusion among candidates, government officials and middlemen. Undeserving candidates bribed MPPEB officials through middlemen to be seated next to brilliant dummy candidates who were also paid money,” sources said.

The CBI found that in some cases the officials under suspicion supplied students solved answer sheets before they took the exam, sources said. The SC in July 2015 had transferred the probe of all cases related to the Vyapam scam to the CBI. Vyapam is a government body responsible for conducting several entrance tests in MP. It recruits for government jobs and handles admissions to educational institutes.

The scam dates back to 2004 and is a well-orchestrated rigging of entrance exams to help undeserving candidates — who allegedly bribed politicians and officials through middlemen — secure high ranks. More than 2,000 people have so far been arrested in connection with the case and 44 people linked to it have turned up dead.

Meanwhile, the agency is also expected to complete its probe into the mysterious death of second-year medical student Namrata Damor, one of the Vyapam scam-related fatalities. Damor was found dead on the railway tracks in Ujjain in January 2012.
