A head constable from Madhya Pradesh, 56-year-old Umesh Goswami, who claims to have enjoyed a friendship with PM Narendra Modi in the 1990s has faxed a message to him eight months ago seeking an appointment with him “just to refresh the old memories of their acquaintance”.

“We had a strong bond when he (Mr Modi) was staying in Bhopal for a brief period of around ten months in the 1990s. He was then the organising secretary of the Madhya Pradesh unit of the BJP,” Mr Goswami, who is currently posted as head constable in state police headquarters, said.

“He used to visit a police officer, his friend, in the police headquarters here. I was then attached to the police officer as a constable. He used to address me as his ‘Giri’ (Krishna) and called himself my ‘Sudama’. He had several times enjoyed his favourite dishes — dal-bafle and bati-churma at my home along with my family,” he said.

According to him, Mr Modi used to lead a very simple life then, sometimes taking bath at a public tap and riding a motorcycle in the city. He used to read a lot sometimes sitting under a tree,” he added.

“We had known him as Modi then. We came to know that he is Narendra Modi when he became the PM in May 2014,” he added.

According to him, he sent a fax to him eight months ago after being persuaded by his family members desiring to meet him.

“I did not want anything. I just want to meet him to refresh the old memories,” he said.
