Kerala: No new five-star hotels, vows UDF poll manifesto

The UDF election manifesto released here on Wednesday makes a number of promises, including strict conditions to open new five-star hotels, a liquor-free state in the next 10 years, interest-free loan

The UDF election manifesto released here on Wednesday makes a number of promises, including strict conditions to open new five-star hotels, a liquor-free state in the next 10 years, interest-free loan to farmers who make prompt repayment of farm loans and monthly scholarship for BPL girl students studying in primary and secondary schools to end the dropout.

Kerala chief minister Oommen Chandy, who released the manifesto, said no new five-star hotels would be allowed in the state. Even if the Centre gives five-star classification, the state government will put forward strict conditions. Steps will be taken to avoid misuse of the liquor policy, he added.

“Even if three and four-star hotels are upgraded to five-star, bar licence will not be given. If the Central government gives five-star sanction, there will be additional criteria for them,” he said.

Muslim League leader P.K. Kunhalikutty said the state was on its way to becoming totally liquor-free. The UDF’s slogan in 2011 was “development and care” and this time it is “shelter, food and health for all”. For farmers who are mentally and financially depressed, the government will provide legal assistance for their security.

“All marginal and small farmers will be included in the state government’s rubber production incentive programme. We will demand Rs 1,000 crore from the Central government to increase the support price of Rs 150 per kg given at present,” says the manifesto.

The manifesto promises a project named “Bhagyalakshmi” for the girl children of BPL families. As soon as a baby girl is born, the government will deposit a fixed amount in her name, in which the parents can also deposit money.
