: The prime accused in the Kerala hand chopping case on Friday surrendered before the NIA court in Kochi. The man has bee identified as M K Nazer, who had been on the run since the incident took place in 2010.

Nazer along with other activists had chopped the right hand of a college professor, for allegedly insulting Prophet Muhammed in a question paper.

In May this year, the NIA Special Court has found 13 men guilty of chopping Professor T.J. Joseph’s palm in protest against a controversial paper drafted by him.

According to the NIA, the accused conspired together and a six- member team carried out the attack on Joseph and chopped off his right palm while he was returning home after attending a Sunday Mass at a church in Muvattupuzha in Ernakulam district on July 4, 2010. The trial of the case began in July 2013.

The court in its judgement said that the prosecution has proved beyond all reasonable doubts that eight of the accused along with some others entered into a criminal conspiracy to eliminate the professor by inflicting grievous injuries.

The court, which began the trial of the case in July 2013, had examined over 300 prosecution witnesses, four defence witnesses, over 950 prosecution documents, nearly 30 defence documents, and over 200 material objects.

There were 37 persons in the chargesheet filed by the NIA. Of those, 31 underwent an in-camera trial. M K Nazer was the mastermind behind the incident.
