Top editors of national media and hundreds of journalists on Tuesday hit the streets demanding action against those involved in beating up members of their fraternity in the Patiala House courts complex in the presence of the police and sought the Supreme Court’s intervention in protecting freedom of speech, A delegation of women journalists also met Union home minister Rajnath Singh and urged him to take strong action against those who thrashed members of their fraternity. Sources said the Union home minister assured the delegation that he would instruct the Delhi police commissioner to take urgent action and ensure the guilty are punished.
Several journalists’ bodies and unions also condemned the attack on mediapersons and demanded action against those involved in the attack. Among those who condemned the incident are the Delhi Union of Journalists, Indian Federation of Working Journalists, Editors Guild of India, News Broadcas-ters Association and the managing committee of the Press Club of India.
