‘Jogis dented Congress image, murdered democracy’

The Congress explained the expulsion of Mr Amit Jogi, a first-time MLA, due to his actions “bringing disrepute and causing damage to the party” by “fixing the 2014 Antagarh Assembly bypolls” in Chhatt

The Congress explained the expulsion of Mr Amit Jogi, a first-time MLA, due to his actions “bringing disrepute and causing damage to the party” by “fixing the 2014 Antagarh Assembly bypolls” in Chhattisgarh along with his father. The Chhattisgarh PCC, which met here Wednesday afternoon, also urged the AICC leadership to show the door to Mr Ajit Jogi in the same way.

“The Chhattisgarh Congress has decided to expel former chief minister Ajit Jogi and his son Amit for tarnishing the image of the party as well as murdering democracy by fixing the byelection to the Antagarh Assembly constituency in 2014, as revealed in an audiotape (that) surfaced recently. While the PCC issued expulsion orders against Amit Jogi, the case of Ajit Jogi, a member of the Congress Working Committee, will be referred to the party high command. The Congress has taken action against its leaders for murdering democracy. Now it is the turn of the BJP to fix accountability on chief minister Raman Singh for his complicity in it, as indicated by the audiotape,” state PCC president Bhupesh Baghel told reporters here.

Mr Baghel, along with CLP leader T.S.Singhdeo, was due to meet Congress president Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi on Thursday to submit the PCC’s proposal to remove Mr Ajit Jogi from the party. The senior Jogi has been admitted at a private hospital since Tuesday night after health complications.

Mr Amit Jogi described his expulsion as “denial of natural justice” to him as no probe had been done to prove the authenticity of the tape before taking action against him. “The decision is feudalistic, arbitrary, unfair, and unjust. I will move Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi against the decision. The Gandhis always stood by us in such a situation,” he said.
