Jawans and officers of the Jammu and Kashmir police have received 35 gallantry medals, the maximum, on the eve of Republic Day, followed by the paramilitary CRPF, which got 24, for the daredevil exploits of its personnel in various theatres of internal security.

A total of 841 police and paramilitary personnel have been decorated with President’s police medals and other categories of service medals on the occasion of the 67th Republic Day on Tuesday.

Border Security Force (BSF) constable Rocky has also become the lone paramilitary trooper to be accorded with the Shaurya Chakra, the third-highest military medal for bravery in peace time, and his colleague Subhendu Roy is the lone winner of the PPMG this time for thwarting a daring terrorist attack on their convoy in Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur last year.

A home ministry statement said the President’s police medals for gallantry have been awarded to three personnel, police medals for gallantry to 121 personnel, President’s police medals for distinguished service to 89 officials and for meritorious service to 628 personnel.

The CRPF has been bagging the highest number of gallantry medals over the last four years for its gallant acts in anti-Naxal operations in the left-wing extremism-hit states and other counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir.

In a first, two troopers of the border guarding Indo-Tibetan Border Police, assistant commandant Deepak Singh and head constable Kanwar Singh, have also been decorated with the PMG for bravely tackling one of the longest standoffs with the Chinese PLA in 2014.

Meanwhile, Rocky’s citation read, “Without caring for his injuries (Rocky) effectively engaged the militants by firing bullets from his personal weapon. He (Rocky) was constantly shouting and asking the occupants of the bus to duck down and remain low to avoid causalities.”
