JD-U, RJD work on UP strategy, but separately

The JD(U) and the RJD are busy preparing a roadmap for the upcoming Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.

The JD(U) and the RJD are busy preparing a roadmap for the upcoming Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.

This became evident on Monday when leaders of both the parties claimed that secular forces will begin their campaigning from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s parliamentary constituency Varanasi. According to sources, both the parties, despite being partners and running the government successfully in Bihar, will launch their campaigns separately in UP. According to RJD sources, party chief Lalu Yadav will visit Varanasi after January 17.

Claiming that the “Lalu model” has become more popular than “Modi magic”, RJD state president Ram Chandra Purvey said Mr Yadav plans to “launch a campaign against communal forces”. He said, “Not just Varanasi, the Lalu model will be successful throughout the country.”

State deputy chief minister Tejaswi Yadav said, “There are elections in UP and West Bengal and he (Lalu Yadav) will visit both the states. The party is still working out strategies for the campaign and efforts are on unite all anti-BJP parties together.” While the BJP is focusing on the consolidation of backward votes in UP, the alliance partners are focusing on backward votes as well as upper-caste votes in eastern Uttar Pradesh.

The RJD and the JD(U) plan to make Varanasi the centre of their anti-Modi campaign. Sources said both the parties are focusing on Varanasi as the place, being a part of Pooravanchal, is an epicentre of backwards and forwards.

“We want Varanasi to become our party’s centre and the JD(U) is going to play an important role in Uttar Pradesh,” JD(U) state president Basisth Narayan Singh said on Monday in Patna.

The JD(U), according to sources, has already begun its ground work as party general secretary K.C. Tyagi has already attended an important meeting of the Patel Navnirman Sena early this month.
