India is continuing its diplomacy to persuade China on why India should be allowed entry into the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), even as New Delhi discussed the issue on Tuesday with a visiting Chinese delegation led by director-general Wang Qun of the Chinese ministry of foreign affairs. The talk was described as “candid, pragmatic and substantive.” On Tuesday, the MEA said, “The talk covered issues of mutual interest in the area of disarmament and non-proliferation. As agreed by the external affairs minister and the Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi in their meeting on 13 August, the two sides focused in particular on an issue of priority for India’s membership of the NSG. The two sides agreed to meet for the next round on a mutually convenient date.” A few months ago, China had stonewalled India’s attempts to gain entry into the NSG. China had argued that India must sign the NPT first, even as the global community was only too aware that Beijing was batting for Pakistan.
