The government on Tuesday appeared to be inching towards pushing the Goods and Services Tax Bill through Parliament with the Congress agreeing to a five-hour debate on the issue in the Rajya Sabha.

The Congress consenting to a debate is being perceived as a positive sign as it has been growing isolated on the issue.

The NDA is likely to reach out to all political parties to get them on board. The GST Bill has been stalled due to stiff resistance from the Congress.

The government appears amenable to addressing the Opposition party’s concerns on three key issues concerning the bill. After PM Narendra Modi made a fresh pitch for the bill’s passage, finance minister Arun Jaitley urged the RS to pass the bill expeditiously to enable states to get a share of the service tax which, he said, they do not currently get.
