UP governor Ram Naik on Friday issued a notification appointing Justice Virendra Singh Yadav (retd) as the new Lokayukta of Uttar Pradesh. The governor approved the appointment of the new Lokayukta recommended by chief minister Akhilesh Yadav, after receiving a copy of the Supreme Court order. The governor had asked the state government to put up the file about the Lokayukta’s appointment along with the orders of the Supreme Court. The new Lokayukta will take oath of office at Raj Bhavan on December 20. It may be recalled that earlier on Wednesday, the Supreme Court had exercised its extraordinary powers under Article 142 of the Constitution to name Justice Virendra Singh Yadav as the new Lokayukta from the list of five names submitted before the court by state government counsel Kapil Sibal. Mr Sibal had made it clear before the court that the five names on the list had the approval of only two of the three members of the selection committee.
The names had the approval of the chief minister Akhilesh Yadav and Leader of the Opposition Swami Prasad Maurya while the third member Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud had not given his approval to any of the names.
