In a “people-centric” decision that would enable early flood forecast, better mapping of inundated areas, better assessment of surface and ground water resources for priority allocation and data-backed advice on cropping patterns to the farmers among other improvements, the Cabinet chaired by PM Narendra Modi Wednesday cleared the implementation of the National Hydrology Project with a total outlay of Rs 3,679.76 crore, out of which nearly '40 crore would be dedicated to the setting up of an autonomous body — national water informatics centre under the water ministry.
The government said that the World Bank would loan 50 per cent of the total amount, while the remaining would be funded as assistance by the Central government from budgetary support. The total amount would be given to states as “grants.” “The NHP will help in gathering hydro-meteorological data which will be stored and analysed on a real time basis and can be seamlessly accessed by any user at the state/district/village level,” said the government.
