Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday lent support to students from various universities who took to the streets in the national capital demanding justice for dalit scholar Rohith Vemula and over the JNU crisis.
Mounting a fresh attack, Mr Gandhi accused the Central government and the RSS of crushing voices of dissent of college and university students across the country and pitched for a law to protect them from “discrimination” and “suppression”.
Addressing the crowd, Rohith’s mother Radhika said; “I see my son Rohith in every one of you today. The Modi government called my son anti-national for protesting for something good. But the government has protected the actual anti-nationals belonging to the BJP and the RSS. Scholarships of dalit students are being stopped in all universities. Is it wrong to be born a dalit then Till the time the Rohith Act is not implemented, we will continue this protest and fight till the end.”
In his address, Mr Gandhi mounted a shrill attack on the Modi government and the RSS, accusing them of crushing voices of dissent of college and university students across the country.
“We need a law to ensure that students in colleges and universities do not face discrimination and their voice is not stifled,” Mr Gandhi said.
The Congress leader also slammed the government for not including issues like Rohith’s death and difficulties being faced by students of universities in the President’s address to Parliament on Tuesday.
Accusing the Centre of muzzling the voice of students across universities in the country if they differ with the ideology of the RSS, he said the Congress will fight for bringing a law to check such “suppression”.
He alleged that the government was trying to suppress not only the youth, but also the adivasis, dalits and other weaker sections.
Mr Gandhi said: “This is the RSS’ ideology. They keep speaking about what happened in the past. They don’t talk about the future. Rohith was talking about the present and the future.”
