Despite the RSS pushing for the use of Indian languages, primarily Hindi, as the language of communication and medium of instruction, Union minister of state for skill development Rajiv Pratap Rudy has strongly pushed for the incorporation of English as part of basic skills in India’s skill development programme. The minister suggested that the learning of English boosts employability at a time when the government is empowering the youth by enabling them to learn skills.
Mr Rudy’s comments are bound to further stir a debate on the use of English. While protagonists of Hindi argue that it should find pride of place, there are many who argue that the teaching of English should be promoted among all, and especially among the weaker sections, to empower them by making them more employable, and that it would be foolish to discourage English in an era of globalisation, particularly at a time when even countries like China are taking steps to teach their youth the language.
He said there was a huge demand for trained manpower. There is a huge requirement even for cabin crew in the aviation sector, but there are not enough people, Mr Rudy lamented.
