A film reportedly based on the Muzaffarnagar riots has run into trouble with a petition that has been filed in the Allahabad high court, seeking a stay on its release. The film Shorgul is due to release on June 24 and stars Jimmy Shergil and Ashutosh Rana. The PIL has been filed by a Meerut social worker, Mr Milan Som, who claims that the film has scenes which could disturb social harmony.

BJP MLA Sangeet Som is also supporting a ban on the film.

According to Mr Milind Som, who is also a VHP activist, the character played by Jimmy Shergil in the film is Ranjeet Som and is apparently inspired by Sangeet Som.

“I have demanded a cancellation of the censor certificate given to this film for ‘deliberately and maliciously outraging the image of Sangeet Som, the BJP MLA from Sardhana’”, the petitioner said. The PIL seeks a ban on the songs, promotions, ads and exhibition of the film till the disposal of the petition.

The PIL states that the film Shorgul is based on politics, on the basis of religion and on riots of Muzaffarnagar... In the film, in a large number of scenes, Jimmy Shergil has used words and dialogues which are definitely indecent, offensive, destructive... (sic)”

The PIL seeks a ban on the songs, promotions, advertisements and exhibition of the film till the disposal of the petition.

Set against the backdrop of Uttar Pradesh, ‘Shorgul’ is co-directed by P. Singh and Jitendra Tiwari and is based on intolerance. It aspires to make the audience contemplate where humanity stands amidst the noise of religious, social, political and economic prejudice.

Sanjay Suri plays the role of Mithilesh Yadav which is based on UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav and Narendra Jha portrays the character of Alim Khan, supposedly based on UP minister Azam Khan. The film begins with a friendship between a Hindu girl and a Muslim boy that snowballs into a major political and communal unrest.
