Taking a serious note of the tirade that West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee launched against the Election Commission following the showcause it slapped on her on Thursday, the poll panel has decided to closely examine speeches. “We have collected the audio and video footage of the statements Ms Banerjee made regarding the Election Commission while addressing election meetings on Thursday after she was slapped the showcause notice. We have already sent the CDs of her speeches to the EC,” additional CEO Dibyendu Sarkar said on Friday. He added that what she had said after being showcaused has been deemed as her reaction.
Meanwhile, Ms Banerjee on Friday replied to the showcause notice that was sent to her for her statement during an election meeting in Asansol recently. Sources in the state secretariat Nabanna informed that chief secretary Basudeb Banerjee sent the reply on behalf of Ms Banerjee. “I have received information that the reply has been sent directly to the EC in Delhi,” a top official of the CEO office in Kolkata said confirming the development.
At the meeting, Ms Banerjee had made some announcements regarding coal projects in the Asansol-Raniganj coal belt and had declared that Asansol would be made a separate district. These utterances were considered violation of the model code of conduct and hence the showcause notice was sent.
