EC sets dates for battle in 5 states

Billed as the “semi-final” ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, elections to the Assemblies of Mizoram, Delhi, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh will be held in a single phase between November 25 and December 4, while the state of Chhattisgarh will have a two-phase election on November 11 and 19 for its 90-member Assembly.

Billed as the “semi-final” ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, elections to the Assemblies of Mizoram, Delhi, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh will be held in a single phase between November 25 and December 4, while the state of Chhattisgarh will have a two-phase election on November 11 and 19 for its 90-member Assembly. Counting for all five states will be taken up on December 8. With the announcement of the schedule, the Election Commission’s model code of conduct comes into force with immediate effect. Madhya Pradesh will elect its representatives for the 230-member Assembly on November 25, and Rajasthan will go to polls for its 200-member House on December 1. Both Delhi, with a 70-member Assembly, and Mizoram, with a 40-member House, will hold elections on December 4. Byelections to the Surat (West) Assembly constituency in Gujarat and Yercaud Assembly seat in Tamil Nadu will also be held on December 4. Chief election commissioner V.S. Sampath, while releasing the schedule for the polls, said the “None Of The Above” (NOTA) option will also be introduced in these Assembly elections, in line with a recent Supreme Court ruling.
