In a late Saturday evening development, the Election Commission has issued showcause notices to AIADMK chief J. Jayalalithaa and DMK president M. Karunanidhi for violating the model code of conduct stating that their election manifestos do not “substantially” fulfill its guidelines.

Both the complaints to the EC are dated May 11 and allege false promises being made by the leaders.

The poll panel had asked the leaders to explain their respective stands for non-compliance of the mandated guidelines of the commission and also “broadly indicate the ways and means to meet the financial requirements by 5 pm on May 16.”

The EC also warned that if the two leaders fail to respond to the show-cause notice, it will take “further appropriate action” against their parties without further reference to them.”

The EC has also postponed the elections to the Aravakurichi constituency in Tamil Nadu to May 23.
