Drunk car driver drags cop along for 500 metres

A 27-year-old drunken driver allegedly hit and dragged a traffic constable for some 500 metres when the latter tried to stop his car in Thane area on Saturday.

A 27-year-old drunken driver allegedly hit and dragged a traffic constable for some 500 metres when the latter tried to stop his car in Thane area on Saturday. The bystanders intercepted the car and nabbed the driver. The police has arrested the driver and registered a case of culpable homicide against him. In another incident, five police constables were injured when a tanker driver tried to run over them during a nakabandi operation.

Police officials said, “On Saturday morning, traffic constable Narisingh Mahapure, 47, was on duty at the busy Teen Hath Naka area in Thane, when he saw a Maruti Ertiga car coming from the wrong side.

The driver was not even wearing his seatbelt. When Mahapure tried to stop the car, the driver took a U-turn to flee. However, in his attempt to bring the driver to halt, the constable kept holding on to a side of car's bonnet and got dragged for 500 metres. Some auto drivers intercepted the car and rescued him.” Senior police inspector of Naupada police station, Gajanan Kadbule, said, “We immediately nabbed the driver. He was identified as Yogesh Bhamre, a resident of Shashtri Nagar in Thane, who works for a tourist company. We have sent him to take an alcohol test as we suspect he was drunk while driving. We have booked Bhambre for culpable homicide, assault or criminal force to deter public servant, rash driving or negligent driving and causing act by endangering others life. The traffic police constable is fine and have minor injuries.” In the second incident, a man driving a petrol tanker tried to run over five constables, including two women constables, during a nakabandi near Panjarpol junction in Govandi at 4 pm. All the injured were taken to a hospital. DCP Shahaji Umap said, “We arrested the accused from the spot. He was drunk. We have registered a case against him under relevant sections of the IPC.-"
