Despite the raging war within the first family, the Samajwadi Party is preparing for a winter election in Uttar Pradesh.

Chief minister Akhilesh Yadav, who is also the state president of the SP, has sent a directive to all party workers asking them to remain prepared for elections in December-January. The Samajwadi Party believes that the BJP would opt for early elections because giving more time they take the steam out of its campaign.

“The BJP is aware that the euphoria over the Modi government is evaporating and would like an early election before the anti-incumbency factor against the centre gets enhanced”, said a senior SP minister. Chief minister Akhilesh Yadav has already set the October deadline for the inauguration of his dream projects including the Lucknow-Agra Expre-ssway, Lucknow Metro and the Gomti river front project. Officers are racing against time to complete these projects.

The Samajwadi Party, too, prefers a winter election because a summer elections would bring back the power crisis and add to its woes.

It is noteworthy that elections to the Vidhan Sabha in 2012 were completed on March 8 but the first sitting of the state Assembly was held on May 28 which means that the term of the state Assembly will end on 27 May, 2017. Though the campaign of the party will be officially launched in the first week of October, the party is holding training camps in each Assembly segment from September 1 to 7.
