A Delhi sessions court on Friday acquitted Kobad Ghandy of terror charges while convicting him of cheating and forgery. Ghandy had been charged — under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act — with being a member of the banned CPI-Maoist and espousing its cause.
Jailed soon after his arrest in September 2009 in Delhi where he had arrived for medical treatment, Ghandy, 70, has already spent about seven years as a high-security, high-risk undertrial prisoner in Tihar jail, almost completing the terms for cheating and forgery. With about 20 criminal and terror cases still pending against him across India, Ghandy will not be let off immediately and will be tried for the offences.
