Israeli ambassador Daniel Carmon said dates for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s much-awaited visit to Israel have yet to be decided, even as he refused to comment on Prime Minister Modi’s acceptance of the invitation to visit Iran, a country which Israel considers an arch enemy and an existential threat to it.

“No dates for the visit (of Mr Modi to Israel) have been decided. But, this visit will happen,” the Israeli ambassador told reporters on Wednesday. In response to another question, he also said that a visit to India by the Israeli President and PM would take place while again refusing to draw any timelines.

Mr Carmon said India and Israel have an “open channel of communication” and a “very friendly dialogue”.

He spoke about the close ties in areas such as defence and agriculture between the two countries.

When asked about Israel’s reaction to PM Modi’s acceptance of an invitation to visit Iran, the Israeli ambassador declined to comment on the matter.

When asked whether there were any hurdles to finalising the dates for PM Modi’s visit to Israel, Mr. Carmon said there were many rumours doing the rounds that were baseless.

Prime Minister Modi is expected to visit Israel this year. He is also expected to visit Iran. The Prime Minister left on a three-nation visit to Belgium, Saudi Arabia and the US on Wednesday.

The Israelis are now offering projects in water management to India, pointing out that Israel had managed to defuse a water crisis by opening desalination plants and availing of advanced technologies to desalinate water. The Israelis will undertake a significant participation at the India Water Week exhibition in the Capital from April 4 to 8.
